Brother - noun

noun: brother ; plural noun: brothers

1. A person who is there when you need him;

2. Someone who picks you up when you fall;

3. A person who sticks up for you when no one else will;

4. A brother is always a friend.

Brotherhood isn't just a word; it's a lifetime dedication to each other; supporting, loving and caring for one another. Many people say it, but very few that actually live it...

My friends and i come from very humble beginnings; with most surviving from day to day; having enough just to keep our houses afloat with a few extras to spend every now and then through what we've managed to save from our monthly income...

Back in 2011, my best buddies and I were supposed to go on a small trip out of Malaysia together after planning it out for almost a year. It would be the very first time we stepped foot outside of our home soil together, as friends. The plan was to each save enough cash for food, lodging, some entertainment; and on the last day, if we had extras, we would use it to get gifts or souvenirs back home...

A few months prior to this trip, i hit a good run in a business i started. However it all ended as quickly as it began. Things somehow came to a stop and i lost everything that i've ever built including my 1,000 sqft office space that i had set-up for us to run our business. I tried and tried and tried tirelessly each day to get back on my feet, but failed. This moment in time is one of the many downfalls that i've had in my life, however i'd rank this right up there with the top 10 of the most difficult periods in my life thus far.

The meeting point for the transport was at my place and i couldn't muster the courage to tell them earlier on that i couldn't make it because a part of me believed that a miracle can happen, even at the last moments; however this time, i might have been pressing my luck...

When the time came for us to make that trip, i told my buddies that i didn't have enough cash to travel with them and that i would have to stay back. Knowing how much we wished to go on this trip together, i failed to keep my end of the bargain by saving the money that i needed to make this journey with them...

Without hesitation, they each looked at one another, took out some cash from each of their shares to raise enough money for me so that i could follow them. This meant that everyone needed to cut back on their planned budgets, spend much less and to cancel some of their own enjoyment plans so that i could make this trip with them. 

It is in that moment, 9 years ago, that i truly understood what 'brotherhood' really meant. It wasn't about the money or the spoiled plans; but it was the decision that everyone made together, WITHOUT HESITATION, to cutback so that we could all be together. No protest, no judging, no complaining; just pure love...

From that day on, i knew that i was blessed in life. It didn't matter whether or not we were related by blood; because we were connected by something even stronger; our hearts; We were connected by love...

I knew from that moment on that they were much more to me than just friends. They were people that would give their lives up, so that i too can live; they were people that loved me for who i am and that to me, is a friendship worth fighting for. From that moment on, i said to myself, come what may, they will and always will be my "Brother in Arms"...
