Skulls are generally depicted as a necklace around a deity, also known as 'munda malas'. However, instead of representing death or loss, it also represents a more deeper and important concept which is 'emptiness' that is considered to be a quality of the universe with its own unique perspectives.

It is viewed as the seat of intelligence, spirit and the raging fire of human life. In many cultures they believed wearing skulls would insure protection and well-being.
